Home Detox

Physician-Led Detoxification in the Privacy of Home

For some patients, beginning recovery does not require admission to a hospital or residential treatment center. With careful medical assessment, meaningful patient engagement, and the right support, detoxification can sometimes be managed safely and privately at home.

Salubre Care provides physician-led home detoxification for carefully selected patients, with treatment individualized according to the substance involved, severity of dependence, medical and psychiatric history, medications, home environment, and available support.

We evaluate patients seeking help with withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, kratom, benzodiazepines, cannabis, and other substances. Because withdrawal risks differ substantially among substances—and from one person to another—every home detox begins with a medical evaluation rather than a predetermined protocol.

Some patients are appropriate for home-based detoxification. Others are safer in a hospital or residential setting.

What Home Detox May Include

When home detox is appropriate, care may include:

  • Physician-directed withdrawal management
  • Medications to reduce withdrawal symptoms and complications
  • Frequent physician contact
  • Monitoring of vital signs and withdrawal symptoms
  • Education and support for family or caregivers
  • Private-duty nursing in the home when closer observation and support are appropriate

Private-duty nurses can provide far more than clinical monitoring. During an unusually vulnerable period, an experienced nurse can offer observation, reassurance, education, encouragement, and a trusted clinical presence for both the patient and family.

The level of medical and nursing support is determined by the needs of the individual patient.

Privacy Without
Compromising Safety

For appropriate patients, receiving care at home can offer privacy, comfort, individualized attention, and the ability to remain in a familiar environment during withdrawal.

But convenience and privacy never take priority over safety. If our evaluation indicates that a patient's medical or psychiatric condition requires hospital-based, residential, or another level of care, we recommend it. If a patient's condition changes during detox, the treatment plan and level of care must change with it.

Detox Is the Beginning,
Not the Destination

Detoxification addresses withdrawal. Recovery requires looking beyond it.

Whenever possible, we begin planning for what comes next while detox is still underway.

Depending on the individual, ongoing care may include medication for addiction treatment, counseling, psychiatric care, treatment of co-occurring mental health conditions, family involvement, peer or recovery support, monitoring, or continued physician-led care.

The transition matters because willingness to accept help can be especially important during and immediately after withdrawal. Rather than treating detox as an isolated event, we try to use that opportunity to help the patient take the next appropriate step.

The goal is not simply to get someone through withdrawal. It is to help create a safe beginning for what comes next.
